Toward Engineered Nanoparticle-Doped Optical Fibers for Sensor Applications

نویسندگان

چکیده

Nanoparticle-doped optical fibers, investigated first as fiber lasers and amplifiers, have gained tremendous interest over the past few years sensors. One of main interests such fibers relies on ability to develop a distributed sensor, allowing real-time measurement with multiplexed architecture. To go beyond actual proof concept, we discuss in this perspective paper three challenges tackle: understanding light propagation heterogeneous materials, controlling nanoparticle formation glass, engineering characteristics. Identified directions follow, they will contribute promote nanoparticle-doped sensors next years.

Rare-Earth Doped Optical Fibers

An optical fiber becomes active by doping its core with one or more atomic elements, usually (but not restricted to) rare-earths (RE’s), more specifically, the lanthanides that occupy the atomic numbers 57 to 71 of the periodic table. As it will be mentioned later in more detail, they use three electrons in bonding to the condensed materials such as crystals and glasses to become triply ionized...

Preparation of tissue-engineered wound dressing consisting of chitosan fibers containing silver ion-doped bioactive nanoparticles for wound healing

Background: Wound healing is a complicated process involving the proliferation of the epithelial cells, deposition of granulation tissue as well as recruitment of inflammatory cells. It also is a hot topic of research for trauma, orthopedics and general surgery studies. There are many forms of cells involved in this process. This study aimed to design a tissue-engineered wound dressing consisti...

Fabrication and Characterization of Polymer Optical Fibers Doped with Perylene-Derivatives for Fluorescent Lighting Applications

Four different dye-doped polymer optical fibers (POFs) have been fabricated following a two-step fabrication process of preform extrusion and fiber drawing, using poly-(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as host material and dye derivatives from perylene and naphtalimide as active dopants. The side illumination technique (SIT) has been employed in order to determine some optical properties of the fabr...

Optical Characterization of Doped Thermoplastic and Thermosetting Polymer-Optical-Fibers

The emission properties of a graded-index thermoplastic polymer optical fiber and a step-index thermosetting one, both doped with rhodamine 6G, have been studied. The work includes a detailed analysis of the amplified spontaneous emission together with a study of the optical gains and losses of the fibers. The photostability of the emission of both types of fibers has also been investigated. Co...
